What could be more surreal and relaxing than a rope hammock hanging in your back yard. The ultimate lazy afternoon decor just waiting for you. Rope hammocks make the perfect landscaping decor to design your yard around. With the typical rope hammock being around 13.5 feet in lenght, all you need is a space around 14 feet to 15 feet in distance to hang your rope hammock.

I have been lucky making hammocks since 1973 and helping others build their backyard paradise. All it take is a little room, a good imagination and some lazy afternoons to enjoy your work.

THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO INSTALL A HAMMOCK IN YOUR BACK YARD 1)TWO POSTS ABOUT 14 FEET TO 15 FEET APART. I use the extra distance to allow for stretching and my favorite..2 in a hammock. 2)ONE POST AND A TREE..JUST INSTALL FOUR X FOUR POST WHERE THE SHADE IS MAXIMUM 3)THE ULTIMATE..TWO HUGE OAK TREES JUST THE RIGHT DISTANCE APART 4)ON YOUR DECK OR PATIO 5)YOUR HOUSE TO A POST 6)YOUR HOUSE TO A TREE 7)AND THEN THE HAMMOCKS STAND..whether you choose one of the many metal stands, design your own PVC or wood stand (which i will dicuss in later articles) or you choose one of the many beautiful roman arc stands. With a hammock stand you just put the hammock in the shade or set it in the sun for a little tanning.

I have had many yards and many hammocks throughout the years and each time I have personalized and landscaped my yard diferently but always kept in mind that my hammock would be the centerpiece. I have had sandy beach yards and natural minimalistic settings and then I have created my masterpiece, a tropical paradise with tiki bar fully stocked with my favorite beverages, a few uniquely carved tikis around the yard, Jimmy Buffet playing in the backgroud(I could not actually get Jimmy so a cd did the trick) and of course that wonderful piece of furniture called a hammock.

When choosing a hammock think about where it will hang and the weather. A cotton hammock is the most comfortable but unless you bring in it will rot(years ago the rope was soaked in things like copper nitrate and other chemicals to weather the elements..but not very good for the skin and long term exposure). Today we mostly use a soft spun polyester rope that feels like cotton but is very weather resistant and available in many colors.

In future articles I will discuss hammocks materials more indepth, hanging you hammock, and making your own stands.

Though I started weaving hammocks in 1973, those days are long gone but I still help young and promising hammock makers with my years of knowledge. Hammocks for sale Today I build surfboards and have a hammock business Freaky Tiki Hammock http://freakytikihammocks.com
